The Magic of moxibustion with DR. QING GE
What is moxibustion?
Moxibustion is a form of heat therapy using a stick or cones made with a dried plant called “mugwort”. The moxa stick or cone can be burned on or near the surface of the skin, to stimulate selected acupuncture points and achieve therapeutic effect.
The functions of moxibustion include expelling cold and wind, unblock the meridian to reduce pain, reduce dampness and swelling, tonifying Yang energy and Qi in the body to improve energy and fertility, etc. It can be used to treat a variety of diseases or for prevention and improving general health.
What are some of the commonly seen conditions treated with moxibustion?
Infertility:
A lot of the time moxibustion is used together with acupuncture and herbal medicine to improve fertility for both male and female patients. For example, indirect moxa can be applied on CV 4 (关元) to improve kidney yang energy, which is very important for fertility and sexual ability. In ancient China, many famous people who lived long and healthy life all mentioned the benefits of using moxa on this specific point.
Indigestion:
St36 (足三里) is the most commonly used point for indigestion. Both moxa and acupuncture can be applied on this point. Moxa this point can help tonify Spleen Qi, move the middle jiao (mainly the digestive system) to improve the function, resolve food stagnation, stop abdominal pain and relieve constipation. Moxa on this point is also known as one of the best ways to improve energy, maintain general health, and prevent sickness.
Turning the baby in breech position:
Moxibustion is known for being an alternative way to help with getting the baby into the best position for birth.
Using indirect moxa on Bl67 (至阴) point can help turn the foetus to the right position for birth. It is a simple procedure, but the timing and the frequency is important. For some patients, moxa on this single point may not be enough and acupuncture or herbal medicine is also needed. Hence for safely and effectiveness, it is best to have the treatment done by a professional. In Australia, not many people are aware of this treatment method and the potential benefits. In countries other than China, like the US and UK, some hospitals also have their staff trained in acupuncture and moxibustion to provide alternative treatments for patients in need.
Some other conditions that can be treated with moxibustion include:
- Menstruation related, such as period pain, irregular period, etc.
- Chronic or acute pain.
- Arthritis.
- Eczema, or other dermatological issues.
- Asthma.
- Oedema.
- Fatigue.
- Cold and flu prevention.
You can do moxibustion by yourself at home, but it is always good to speak to a qualified Chinese Medicine Practitioner and have treatments in clinic first. After having a few treatments, you may follow the instructions to do it at home.
