Acupuncture in Pregnancy
Acupuncture can be a great tool to help navigate the health issues and aches and pains that can arise during pregnancy.
The acupuncture treatment you receive changes throughout your pregnancy journey.
First Trimester
During the first 12 weeks, acupuncture focuses on creating a stable foundation for your pregnancy. Treatments aim to support your body as it nourishes your growing baby and adapts to rapid changes in your body. This stage of care also helps ease early pregnancy symptoms such as fatigue, nausea, morning sickness, and general discomfort.
If you’re experiencing exhaustion, dizziness, aches, nausea, vomiting, this type of support may be especially helpful. Sessions are typically twice weekly at first, then weekly until the end of the first trimester.
Second Trimester
From weeks 13 to 27, acupuncture focuses on supporting and helping maintain a healthy, balanced pregnancy. Treatments aim to ease common discomforts such as lower back or pelvic pain, headaches, digestive issues like heartburn or reflux, and emotional symptoms including anxiety or low mood.
If you’re dealing with persistent or painful symptoms, weekly sessions may be recommended. Otherwise, many expectant mothers benefit from monthly check‑ins during this stage.
Third Trimester
In the final weeks of pregnancy, acupuncture helps prepare your body for labour and ease late‑pregnancy discomforts. Most women come monthly until around week 30–32, then shift to weekly sessions to allow enough time for effective labour preparation.
From week 36, treatments focus on supporting and encouraging the body’s natural readiness for birth.
Post-Birth
The weeks after birth — often called the “fourth trimester” — are a crucial time for recovery. Acupuncture can offer gentle support during this period, helping with both physical healing and emotional wellbeing. Treatments can begin whenever you feel ready and are usually scheduled weekly or fortnightly throughout the first month.
